Newcastle 2.7 km light rail services have started today, following a free community day held yesterday. The line connects Newcastle city centre and the public transport interchange at Wickham to the beautiful Newcastle beache. Services are operated by Keolis Downer as part of a large 10 years contract with Transport for New South Wales to operate buses, light rail and ferries for Newcastle. The rolling-stock fleet consists of 6 battery-equipped low floor CAF Urbos LRVs. The network is catenary free, with on-board storage system recharged in 23 seconds cycles.
